The idea behind the Clovelly Soap Company started life in 2004 when I decided to change the pace of my busy life in the city and heal the negative effects that commercial skin and cleaning products were having on my health and well-being.
I wanted to use traditional methods, the best natural ingredients and introduce others to the difference that handmade soap & skincare can make to your skin.
Studying hard, I became a massage therapist and learnt the art of Aromatherapy along the way. Myriad massage treatments, dog-walking and pet-sitting sessions, and many experimental bars of soap later, the business was launched in North London, selling at craft fairs and in local shops. My husband Casie joined me in the dog-walking and soap-making and the business expanded, making bespoke ranges for boutique shops.
When one of my oldest customers asked if I would like to teach soap-making in her new craft studio, a new branch to the business was born.
Three years later and with an additional member of the family in the form of our first daughter, Rowan, we decided to make the leap back to a rural life. We were wonderfully lucky and found the perfect new home for the family and the business on the famous and unique Clovelly Estate in beautiful Devon. The old village Granary was renovated in perfect time for us to move in, with a purpose built studio for classes and old stone workrooms for soap-making. The estate also gave the business its new name and The Clovelly Soap Company was born.
The last 6 years have been a whirlwind and our brand and products have grown beyond my wildest expectations. Opening a small beautiful shop at the top of the famous Clovelly Cobbles in 2014 and having another child as well as writing my first book in the same year meant that we needed to find help to ensure our sanity and help with the myriad of orders and enquiries.
Along Came Natalie…
Devon was my birth place and I still have family here among them my fabulous cousin Natalie. Natalie started with us part time to help in the shop but her organisational skills and speed wrapping soon made her indispensable and she has been fulltime with us for over 2 years now. She is now based at Head Office and has taken over a vast amount of the administration to allow me to be a Mum whilst continuing to develop our online business and new products.
And then there as Sharon....
We always intended to hire as locally as possible and when searching for a new shop assistant we looked no further than the Clovelly Cobbles. Sharon is a village personality and is well known for her work on 2minutebeachclean and her beautiful Instagram images of our stunning village and Devon life. She can be found in the shop mostly with a broom in hand and her Apron on keeping the shop neat as a pin and entertaining us with her Soap Shop Tales.
What Kate did next....
As our list of stockists has expanded and the shop has grown busier we needed someone to round off the team and give us organisational support, work in the shop and become a soap apprentice (a huge deal for us to let go of the reigns!) An email out of the blue came early 2017 from Kate who just happened to live in Clovelly and had an obsession with Essential Oils. She popped up to meet us with a gorgeous smelling gift for me and we have not looked back. Kate makes soap, organises us and helps everywhere she can giving us some much needed family time safe in the knowledge we have an awesome team behind us. When she is not working she can be found in the pub singing her heart out! Or enjoying an Aromatherapy bath with one of her amazing blends. She is training as an Aromatherapist which will bring even more skills to our little business.
We are incredibly lucky to have a great team behind us who share our passion for natural products and for Clovelly. We hope to go from strength to strength with them and our fabulous stockists. If you want to become a stockist please call or drop us an email via our contact page
